Pile Installation Supervision and Technical Monitoring

Professional supervision and technical monitoring of piling works, where appointed and required, so that site installation stays aligned with the approved design.

What the supervision service covers

  • Professional supervision or technical monitoring of piling works, where appointed and required.
  • Review of method statements, installation records and logs, within the agreed scope.
  • Site observations against the approved design, drawings and specifications.
  • Coordination of site queries between the design team, the contractor and the site team.
  • Review of design implications when ground conditions differ from those assumed.

Roles and responsibilities

Supervision requirements for piling works come from the Building Control Act and Regulations and depend on the nature and scale of the works. The supervision roles we take on, the frequency of attendance and the records we review are set out in the written appointment.

The contractor remains responsible for the works. The piling contractor remains responsible for its means and methods, workmanship, safety and execution, unless a separate written appointment says otherwise. Supervision checks the works against the approved design within the agreed scope. A professional site visit does not, on its own, guarantee the quality of all piling works.

What we look at on site

The focus depends on the pile type and the appointment. Typical items include:

  • Pile positions and setting-out against the approved layout.
  • Installation records, such as boring logs, driving or jacking records, depths and termination criteria.
  • Materials and reinforcement records relevant to the piles.
  • Ground conditions encountered compared with the site investigation.
  • Non-conformances and how they are resolved with the design team.

Constrained and sensitive sites

Where piling takes place close to existing buildings, rail structures, drains or sewers, extra monitoring or approvals may be needed. For example, works near rail structures may need clearance from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), and works near public sewers and drains may need clearance from PUB. Where this applies, we coordinate the engineering information within our scope.

Related services

Supervision follows the pile design and BCA submission, and runs alongside pile testing coordination so that site records and test results come together at close-out.
